West Coast Landscape

This window was commissioned by someone who wanted to make a special mark on their new home near Edinburgh. Having moved from the West coast of Scotland, the client wanted the window to be a reminder of previous outdoor adventures.

People tend to associate stained glass windows with the exterior of their homes, however this one was for an internal door between the bathroom and hallway. It floods the hallway with colour and light and becomes a central feature of the home.

I visited the client's home to see the space and get to know more about locations and colours they wanted the design to reference. I tested various glass types in the doorway to ensure that the window would still allow privacy in the bathroom. The rippled texture of the river, for example, obscures views through the window.

Once the client had approved my drawing, the window was made from painted glass, fired in the kiln and then connected with lead and solder.

The original bathroom windows before work commenced.

The process of removing the old windows, by chiselling out the frame.

The new windows are then inserted and the frame replaced to secure them.

Another massive thank you for your work and all your skill. The door is properly beautiful, really incredible. I keep catching it in different lights and being awestruck all over again.
